Prioritizing: Finding Space In A Full Calendar
You’ve seen the stories: habits of millionaires, tips from huge corporation CEOs… and you probably thought the same thing I thought: money can buy a lot of help.
But there was a time when these high-powered people were just getting started. Like us, they were juggling full lives and a long list of responsibilities. But here is the thing to ask yourself about that long list: does this task bring me closer to my goal?

Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely do not subscribe to the idea of never ending hustle. Being focused and dedicated to a goal does not mean working yourself to the point of exhaustion.
The secret is to get laser focused on the goal and only add tasks to your to-do list if they bring you closer to that goal.
Create a List of Current Responsibilities
Make a list of the events and activities that you participate in. This list should be as inclusive as you can make it; from the dinners that need to be planned, to the events you need to attend, all the way up to the most time-consuming tasks.
Big or small, put it on the list. (I love Todoist for this!)
Decide How You Will Participate
Rate your involvement for every item on the list. Use a simple, three part scale to identify:
- which items require you to simply show up
- which items require a contribution
- which items require your undivided attention
Ask the Difficult Question
By decreasing your participation in the tasks from #1 and #2 (either by saying no or delegating elsewhere), you can free up more of your precious time to focus on #3! I promise that with practice, this becomes second nature.
Simplify the list as much as you can and identify those items that require the most involvement and bring you the most stress. Can you bring them down to a manageable level?
For example: If a task is a must-do, high-stress, and high-involvement item, ask yourself :
Do I personally need to accomplish this?
Can I hire it out to a local business or neighborhood kid?
Remember that sometimes less is more; meal kit services can help eliminate meal-planning stress, local housekeeping companies can take on the occasional deep cleaning project, and delegation to friends and family can encourage togetherness.
